We provide several ways to search the large Chemical Research library of content including:
- EXPERTIndex that allows you to search Collections and Documents by CAS RN or chemical name.
- Full Text search that provides several ways to search by term, CAS RN, combinations of phrases and requirements.
- Advanced search that allows you to search specific content sets to dig deeper.
You can also set up filtered searches using the MyExpert functionality.
EXPERTIndex™
The EXPERTIndex™ Search searches our 6 million term index based on the substance you’re interested in researching. Searches will return results on substances whose names start with the text you enter. For example, a search on Dinitro will return all entries starting with Dinitro. A search on 71-43 will return all entries starting with 71-43. You can also search for full CAS RNs, chemical names, or terms. If you enter a CAS RN, we will return the exact match result.

There are multiple ways to leverage our Full Text search in Chemical Research. Full Text search is a great way to include multiple terms in your search criteria, or to search for specific terms.
- Simple Term Search: Enter a term into the search box and click Submit. For instance, searching for "leukemia" will find all documents containing that term. To search for multiple terms, separate them with a space. By default, this search uses the AND operator, so entering "benzene leukemia" will return documents containing both terms.
- Phrase Search: To search for an exact phrase, enclose it in quotation marks. For example, entering "moderate skin irritant" will return documents containing that specific phrase.
- Connectors: Use operators to refine your search. By default, terms are connected with AND. To search for documents containing any of several terms, use OR. For instance, entering nausea OR dizziness will return documents with either term. Available connectors include AND, OR, and NOT.
- Groups: Use parentheses to group terms and phrases. For example, (phenol OR benzene) AND leukemia will return documents containing either phenol or benzene along with leukemia. Since parentheses are used to group terms, if the term itself contains parentheses, escape them with a backslash. For example, to search for (+/-)-2-(4-CHLOROBENZOYLAMINO)-3-(2(1H)-QUINOLINON-4-YL)-PROPIONIC ACID, each parenthesis would need to be escaped. So, the search would be \(+/-\)-2-\(4-CHLOROBENZOYLAMINO\)-3-\(2\(1H\)-QUINOLINON-4-YL\)-PROPIONIC ACID.
- Wildcard Search: Use an asterisk (*) to search for terms starting with specific characters. For example, leuk* will find terms starting with "leuk." Note that the asterisk should be placed after the characters (e.g., leuk*), not before or between characters.
- Combinations: A search query can be created using a combination of the above search types. For example (benzene or formaldehyde) and leuk*. This query returns documents which contain benzene OR formaldehyde AND contains terms beginning with leuk*.
Advanced Searches
ToxPlanet’s Advanced Search options allow for more targeted searches within specific content sets:
- MSDSonline® Advanced Search: Search across MSDS documents by Product Name, Manufacturer Name, or Product CAS Number. Avoid overly generic terms and ensure you specify relevant details.
- TOXLINE Special® Advanced Search: Conduct Boolean searches across the TOXLINE Special collection. Choose the field to search, enter your criteria, and use Boolean operators to refine your results. For example, cancer in the Title field AND Publication Year from 2015 to 2017.
- REACH Registrations Advanced Search: Focus your searches within the ECHA REACH Registrations Database. Search by Name, EC Number, or CAS Number. The default search option is Name.
- TSCATS Complete™ Advanced Search: Perform full-text searches within TSCATS Complete citations. Search by Title, Abstract, Author, Corporate Author, Supplemental Notes, or NTIS Issue Number. You can also filter by Publication Year.
- PubMed® Advanced Search: Search the PubMed® database by selecting specific fields and entering your criteria. For example, searching for "benzene in the Title field AND Publication Year from 2015 to 2017."
