MSDSonline® is the premier collection of safety data sheets (SDSs), previously known as material safety data sheets (MSDSs). ToxPlanet's version of MSDSonline provides integrated access to millions of SDSs from thousands of vendors worldwide. This tutorial will guide you through searching the MSDSonline collection using advanced features, including Product Name/Synonym searching, Manufacturer Name searching, and Product CAS Number searching.
To begin, click on the Advanced tab and select MSDSonline Advanced. You will find three search boxes that allow you to search using one or more criteria:
- Product Name/Synonym (avoid common or non-specific terms like "acid" or "oil")
- Manufacturer Name (avoid common terms like "Company," "Inc.," or "Corp.")
- Product CAS Number (e.g., 71-43-2 or 71432)
Enter your desired search criteria in the corresponding search box(es) (for example, type "phenol" in the Product Name search box), and click the Submit button to execute the search.
The search will return a tabular list of chemical terms/product names based on the established search criteria. For example, if you search for "phenol," the list will include all Product Names containing "phenol" for which SDSs are available. This display will also show additional information such as Manufacturer Name, CAS Number, Revision Date, and the number of documents and pages in the results list.
You can navigate through the results pages using the paging arrows or by entering a specific page number. You can also choose how many results to load per screen (10, 30, or 50).
To print results, use either Print Current Page or Print All Results. In the print window, you can also save these results as a PDF. To access the Print Settings menu, click on the gear icon next to the printer icons.
By clicking on the Product Name, the corresponding SDS will open as a PDF document in a new window. Within the document, you can use the native PDF controls (Print, Save, etc.) to manage the document.
