A Full Text Search allows you to perform simple or compound searches across the body of text in all documents within the underlying collections. In this tutorial, we will cover how to conduct Full Text searches using various search techniques, including simple term searches, phrase searches, connector searches, group searches, term starts-with searches, and combination searches.
Simple Term Search
To search for a specific term, enter the term into the search box. For example, to find documents containing the term "perfluoroalkyl," type perfluoroalkyl and click Submit. The search results will show documents, organized by product and content collections, that include the term "perfluoroalkyl" in the full text.
Phrase Search
To search for a specific phrase, enclose the phrase in quotation marks. For example, to locate documents with the phrase "methyl tert-butyl ether", enter "methyl tert-butyl ether" and click Submit. The search results will display documents, organized by product and content collections, that contain the exact phrase "methyl tert-butyl ether" in the full text.
Connector Search
To search for documents containing all specified terms, connect the terms with "AND." For instance, to find documents with both "asbestos" and "cancer", type "asbestos AND cancer" and click Submit. The available connectors are: AND, OR, and NOT. The results will include documents where both "asbestos" and "cancer" appear in the full text.
Group Search
You can group multiple search terms or clauses using parentheses. For example, to search for documents containing either "toluene" or "bromobenzene" and also "formaldehyde", enter (toluene OR bromobenzene) AND formaldehyde and click Submit. The search results will show documents where the full text contains either "toluene" or "bromobenzene" and also "formaldehyde."
Term Starts-With Search
To find terms that start with specific characters, enter the characters followed by an asterisk (*). For example, to search for terms beginning with "methionyl," type "methionyl*" and click Submit. Note that the search will not work if the asterisk precedes the characters (*methionyl) or appears between characters (methio*nyl). The results will include documents where the full text contains terms starting with "methionyl."
Combination Search
You can combine different search types in a single query. For example, to search for documents containing terms starting with "perfluoro" or the term "benzene" and also the term "acid", enter (perfluoro* OR benzene) AND acid and click Submit. The results will display documents where the full text includes terms starting with "perfluoro" or "benzene" and also "acid."
